No matter where you are situated within the lab, whether it is for school, for work, or even during your free time there are certain factors you have to keep in mind to maintain productivity without any interruption.

A lab can be a stressful place if things are not organized, or if any one person doesn’t communicate, especially when chemicals or flammable objects are involved! You always need to be aware of your surroundings to eliminate risks and potential hazards to you and everyone else within the room. There are several ways to maintain strong work relationships within your lab so it can be a fun, exciting, and educational environment conducive to learning. There are many skills that can be learned in a laboratory if you follow the proper procedures.

Some of the most important factors to consider before you even begin the technical work is to effectively adhere to guidelines outlining common etiquette and even understanding each person’s work style. You need to understand how each person reacts to certain things so that you can work effectively without interruptions. You also want to maintain proper time management and don’t do things like use too much time on the internet. You never know if someone else in the room needs to use that resource as well for their research. Also, procrastinating is not a productive habit to have when working in the lab.

Important factors to get consider when you start working in the lab

You will need to pay close attention to details once you begin the scientific analysis of your project, so references and documentation will be required. In some labs, this is mandatory depending on the complexity and severity of the subject being studied. It is also helpful to have proper documentation for your educational purposes so you can review and study what was done at a later point in time. It is also extremely important to have documentation and references in case a hazardous condition arises. For example, if a chemical spills you will need to know its chemical make-up to properly treat the spill.

One of the best things to do when you work in the lab is to listen to the instructor or even the manager of the facility. They often are the ones who set the rules, and anyone who is found not following procedures to ensure safety and efficiency may be kicked out if they are in reckless disregard of the policies in place to maintain order and organization. Maintaining clear communication skills, knowing where certain instruments and resources are, and knowing who to talk to when you have a question or if something goes wrong are also good rules of thumb to keep in mind while you work in the lab.

When you follow these strict procedures and policies everyone will be happy. You will be able to complete you work without interruption which allows for the best clarity when focusing on the technical nature of what you are studying in the lab. Your focus should be on completing your task and eliminating risks due to the fact that most labs are compact and close quarters when a lot of people are present. When you follow these guidelines you will get your best work done while also helping others around you completes their work. You can’t go wrong when you maintain good working relationships in the laboratory.
